RARE DISEASE DAY
Rare Disease Day
On the last day of February, rare health conditions are recognised around the world, following a Swedish initiative that began in 2008.
Today, there are more than 8,000 different rare diseases – conditions that affect no more than 5 in 10,000 people. Altogether, almost half a million people in Sweden and 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease. So being rare is not that uncommon after all.
Awareness and knowledge remain limited – not only among the general public, but also among many politicians, decision-makers and healthcare professionals. That is why Rare Disease Day is such an important awareness day, shining a light on rare diseases and the people who live with them. It is also a day to celebrate a sense of community and pride.
Together, we can raise awareness and understanding of rare diseases!
